In private and in public, we’re glued to our smartphones — often at the expense of having a conversation with real human beings in front of us! In fact that was one of the motivations behind the development of Google Glass by Sergey Brin. Brin asked why should we be looking down all the time? We miss a lot of life. Writer and director Gary Turk urges everyone to put down their gadgets in his poem Look Up. At the time of this CarterReport edition, Look Up has more than 12 million views on YouTube. Whether you deem this video as hypocritical or inspiring, it really bears a powerful message! What do you think?
The video is a touching montage of a lost young man falling in love with a woman who gives him directions, and their life together without the hindrance of social media. Look Up doesn’t criticize social media entirely, but rather encourages you to take a break from your online life to experience real connections.
To quote Turk in the video, “Look up from your phone, shut down the display. Take in your surroundings, make the most of today. Just one real connection is all it can take to show you the difference that being there can make.”
